America must be the only place in the world where beggars drive up to your place in their cars to ask for a hand out.

Today I got told by a guy who was as big as a refrigerator that he was "getting back into bad stuff" by which he meant some unspecified felony. Heard this schtick before.

Asking for a hand out is a tremendously humiliating thing, and so beggars usually try to save some face by trying to con you. They always need "traveling money" or some other such deceit. One woman who comes in regularly tried to tell us for a while that she had "big money coming in from a lawsuit", and of course she wanted to pay back the church.

Yeah, everybody's working a con. Do they realize that if they simply came in and said "I'm a beggar, please give me 10 bucks" they would get their 10 bucks? Yes, but that would be humiliating. So the rule is that if you want to give money to the needy, you must also allow them to lie outrageously and persistently to you.
